What we cover
The full Grade 5 English syllabus, taught in order and revisited until it sticks.
- ✓Analyzing texts
Fifth grade is where reading shifts from what happened to why the author wrote it that way. Students learn to track a character’s change, weigh word choice, and back an interpretation with lines from the page.
- ✓Theme & summary
Summarizing without retelling the entire plot, and stating a theme as a full idea rather than a one-word topic like friendship. Both are tested constantly and taught halfway just as often.
- ✓Argument & informative writing
Two forms with different jobs — one takes a position and defends it, the other explains without taking sides. Fifth graders routinely blur them, arguing inside a report or reporting inside an argument.
- ✓Advanced grammar
Clause structure, parallelism and modifier placement — the level where grammar stops being about correctness and starts controlling how clearly a sentence argues. Comma splices and dangling modifiers are the marks that show up most often on graded essays.
- ✓Vocabulary in context
Working out an unfamiliar word from the sentence around it, which is how both school texts and standardised tests actually test vocabulary.
What your child gets
Small synchronized cohorts
Classes are small and move together, so a teacher can see who is lost. A student who needs a second explanation gets one in the room, not at home that night.
Personalized to each student's depth
We cover the full syllabus for the grade, and let students who are ready move faster. Pacing is set by the student's level, not the group average.
Unik practice between classes
Every course includes the Unik platform for practice between sessions, so the work continues in the six days you aren't in class.
Progress you can see
Sessions and practice are tracked, so you know what was covered and what still needs work — rather than finding out at the next report card.
Small group or 1:1?
They solve different problems, and plenty of families use both.
Small-group class
A set weekly schedule, a cohort moving through the full syllabus together, and the discussion that comes from working alongside other students at the same level. This is the main programme for most families.
1:1 private tutoring
Hours bought as a pack and scheduled around your student, with the whole session spent on exactly what they need — a topic they missed, an upcoming exam, or a subject moving faster than the class.
Inside the class
How a Grade 5 English Tutoring session actually runs, from the teacher who runs it.
- 1
A check on last week first
Class opens with questions on the previous session and the practice set, so the teacher can see who is solid and who needs a second pass before new material lands on top.
- 2
The new idea, taught directly
The teacher works the concept through with the class — where it comes from, what it is for, and the mistakes students reliably make with it.
- 3
Guided practice, then independent
Students work problems with the teacher watching, so errors are caught in the room, and then work a set on their own before the session ends.
- 4
Practice between classes on Unik
Every course includes the Unik platform, so the work continues in the days between sessions and the teacher sees what was attempted before the next class.

Grade 5 English — questions parents ask
How are Grade 5 English classes taught?
Two 45-minute classes each week. Textbook + Unik LMS access included. Classes are small synchronized cohorts, so the group moves through the full syllabus together while pacing stays matched to each student's level.
Where can my child take Grade 5 English?
In person at our Apex, NC; Morrisville, NC; and Dublin, CA centers, or live online from anywhere in the United States. Online classes use the same curriculum, the same small-group format and the same Unik platform.
Is Grade 5 English aligned to my child's school curriculum?
Yes. In North Carolina we follow NC state standards; in Dublin, California we follow the California Integrated Math pathway. Online students are taught the standards for their own state.
Should we choose a small-group class or 1:1 tutoring?
A small-group class is the right fit for keeping pace with school across a term. 1:1 private tutoring suits a specific gap or a deadline, since the whole hour goes on exactly what that student needs. Families often use both.
What if my child is behind, or ahead?
Both are normal and both are planned for. We re-teach missing fundamentals rather than pushing past them, and students who are ready move through material faster instead of waiting for the group.
